An apparatus and a method for controlling a projection type display device are provided to detect brightness information of each of red, green and blue light sources and control a driving current of each light source according to the detected brightness information to automatically control white balance. An apparatus for controlling a projection type display device includes a light source unit(300) for providing red, green and blue lights, a power supply(100) for supplying power, and a power transformer(200) for receiving the power from the power supply and transforming the received power to voltages respectively suitable for the red, green and blue lights. The apparatus further includes a sensor(400) for sensing the quantities of the red, green and blue lights, and a signal processor(800) for outputting a signal for controlling a driving current of the light source unit according to the quantities of the red, green and blue lights.
