An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to restrain the capacity of a compressor according to atmospheric temperature and temperature of an indoor heat exchanger, and control the rpm of an indoor fan, thereby carrying out cooling mode at a low temperature smoothly. An air conditioner includes a variable displacement type compressor, an indoor heat exchanger serving as an evaporator in a cooling mode, and an atmospheric temperature sensor. A control part restrains a lowest capacity of the compressor when the sensed atmospheric temperature is in a preset range, and variably controls the capacity of the compressor according to a load over the restrained lowest capacity. The lowest capacity of the compressor satisfies a range in which freezing is not generated.
