A variable displacement type rotary compressor is provided to restrain a vane by pressure of an inner space of a casing in a power-saving mode, thereby increasing a refrigeration capacity decrease rate. A variable displacement type rotary compressor includes a casing kept in a discharge pressure state, and at least one or more cylinders(410) fixed in the casing and having compression chambers and a vane chamber(412) outside the compression chambers with a predetermined volume, wherein a vane(440) contacts a rolling piston(430) by pressure or separated therefrom in the vane chamber according to pressure change in the vane chamber. A valve unit connects the vane chamber to a suction part or a discharge part alternatively for supplying suction pressure or discharge pressure to the vane chamber for carrying out the contact or separation between the vane and the rolling piston.
