An array substrate for an in-plane switching mode LCD, and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to improve brightness by using an edge shape of an electrode by forming a common electrode by accumulating a transparent electrode and an opaque electrode, and improve a contrast characteristic by preventing a light leakage by placing an opaque electrode at a center area of an electrode where the light leakage is easily generative. A plurality of pixel areas(P) are defined on a substrate. Gate lines(108) and data lines(126) are located at one side and the other side of the pixel area. A thin film transistor(T) is located at a cross point of the gate line and the data line. A common electrode(114) is formed at the pixel area, having a transparent electrode(TP) and an opaque electrode(OP) narrower than the transparent electrode. A pixel electrode(132) is separated from the common electrode, in parallel with the common electrode.
