A method for maintaining a firmware and a mobile communication terminal of realizing the firmware is provided to classify A firmware according to characteristics and install classified firmware in different memory areas, thereby effectively managing a memory. A memory includes a basic code area(201) in which an essential firmware is installed and an additional code area(203) in which an optional firmware is installed. The essential firmware includes binary codes essential to drive the mobile terminal. The optional firmware includes selective binary codes. A controller installs the essential firmware among downloaded firmware in the basic code area(201) and stores the option firmware in the additional code area(203). A dormant area of the additional code area(203), in which a firmware is not installed, is dedicated as a file system. A specific firmware selected by a user is installed in the addition code area.
