An array substrate for an in-plane switching mode LCD and a method for fabricating the same are provided to improve brightness by enlarging an aperture area by controlling upper liquid crystal of pixel electrodes by an electric field generated between the pixel electrodes and common electrodes, and improve a viewing angle characteristic in a diagonal direction by horizontally arranging the pixel electrodes while having inclination of 0-45 degrees to a horizontal direction. Gate lines(104) and data lines(120) cross on a substrate(100) for defining pixel areas(P). Thin film transistors are formed at cross points of the gate lines and the data lines. Plate-shaped transparent common electrodes(102) are placed at the pixel areas. Pixel electrodes(126) are placed on the common electrodes, formed of a first vertical part(126a), a second vertical part(126b), and a plurality of horizontal parts(126c) connecting the first vertical part with the second vertical part. An insulating layer is placed between the common electrodes and the pixel electrodes, having 3-4 of permittivity. |
