An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a driving method thereof are provided to reduce power consumption without lowering display quality by providing a plurality of first optical sensors detecting external light at a lower substrate display area of a liquid crystal panel and a plurality of second optical sensors detecting light of a backlight unit, and comparing external light with light of the backlight unit. A liquid crystal panel includes a first substrate divided into a display area where an image is displayed and a non-display area, a liquid crystal layer, and a second substrate. A backlight unit is disposed at a back surface of the liquid crystal panel, and emits light. A plurality of gate lines and a plurality of data lines perpendicularly intersect each other on the first substrate. A plurality of first sensor lines(220) and a plurality of second sensor lines(240) are arranged in parallel with the data line. A plurality of first sensors(200) are disposed at intersections between the gate lines and the first sensor lines at a first area of the first substrate, and detect external light. A plurality of second sensors(210) are disposed at intersections between the gate lines and the second sensor lines at a second area of the first substrate, and detect light of the backlight unit.
