A protocol setup method of a mobile communication terminal according to an e-mail server is provided to automatically set a protocol in an e-mail client of the terminal according to a protocol supported by the e-mail server, thus there is no need to perform a procedure of resetting a protocol though the supported protocol is different from the protocol set in the terminal. A user adds an e-mail account to a terminal(S101). The user attempts to connect with an e-mail server of the account with the added account by using the terminal(S102). If the connection fails, a connection fail response is received from the e-mail server(S103). Protocol setup information of the terminal is changed(S104). The user attempts to reconnect to the e-mail server with the changed information by using the terminal(S105). It is decided whether the reconnection is successful(S106).
