Disclosed is a device for operating illumination means, especially an electronic ballast (EVG) for gas discharge lamps, comprising a power factor correction circuit (PFC) for reducing harmonic oscillations when accepting input current, current being accepted at the input end only during predetermined intervals (t_ON). The predetermined interval (t_ON) during which current is accepted is modulated when a DC voltage is applied at the input end.
