A method for displaying messages in digital home appliances and an apparatus for controlling display of messages are provided to display a message to a user at the time when the user wants and allow the user to obtain sufficient information from the digital home appliances. A method for displaying a message in a digital home appliance includes a step of storing message output setting information inputted by a user(420), and a step of displaying the message with reference to the message output setting information. The message displaying step includes a step of determining whether the message output setting information corresponds to a video output state of the digital home appliance, a step of displaying the message when the message output setting information corresponds to the video output state, and a step of making the message be in a standby state when the message output setting information does not correspond to the video output state.
