<p>The present invention relates to polyurethane-urea layers having higher surface energy. These polyurethane-urea layers are formed on a substrate from a reactive mixture, and comprised of A) a compound containing isocyanate groups, B) an organic compound containing isocyanate-reactive groups, and C) from 0.5 to 10% by weight, based on the total weight of component A), B) and C), of at least one material selected from the group consisting of 1) a reactive non-ionic polar material , 2) a reactive ionic polar material, 3) a non-reactive polar material, and 4) a mixture thereof. These polyurethane-urea layers have a surface energy from about 45 to 70 dynes/cm at room temperature, and the amount of component C) is such that the polar contribution towards the surface energy is between 10 and 40 dynes/cm. Polyurethane-urea layers such as these have been found to have improved adhesion and wet-out properties when used to form unitary carpet backing and to form precoat layers for carpet backing.</p> |
