1,229,350. Solid pigment compositions. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 17 Sept., 1969 [26 Sept., 1968], No. 45718/69. Heading C4A. [Also in Division C3] A solid pigment composition for colouring thermoplastics is produced by intimately admixing 60-95% by wt. insoluble finely-divided pigment and 5-40% by wt. of a C 12 -C 26 fatty acid salt and compacting the admixture; up to 20% of a C 12 -C 26 fatty acid may also be included. The ingredients may be stirred or tumbled together but are preferably ground in a ball or hammer mill, a pulverizer, or a micronizer. Compacting is then effected conventionally, e.g. on rollers, to form a friable mass preferably not exceeding 0À25 inch thickness. For use, the compact is granulated. Specified acids are myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachidic, behenic, and lignoceric acids. The metal cation of the salt may be Zn, Ca, Al, Mg, Pb, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Sr, Cd, Ba or Sn. In Examples 1-3 and 5-8, zinc or aluminium stearate and stearic acid are used with TiO 2 alone or with other pigments, viz. ultramarine blue, rubinol red, phthalocyanine green, cadmium yellow and carbon black; in Example 4 the salt is Zn, Al, Na, Li, Ba or Ca stearate, Al mono- or distearate or hydroxystearate, Al or Zn palmitate or Zn behenate.
|
