A method and an apparatus for a decoding in a broadband wireless access system are provided to improve a data transmission speed by rapidly decoding a turbo symbol using a double binary code. A decoding apparatus in a broadband wireless access system includes plural adders(601,603,605,607), plural comparators(609,611,613,615,617,619), and a multiplexer(629). The adders add plural state matrices corresponding to respective states of an arbitrary position on a turbo decoding trellis of received information data to plural branch matrices corresponding to the state matrices. The comparators group the added results into plural pairs and simultaneously compare the result values from the different pairs with one another. The multiplexer selects a predetermined result value corresponding to the compared results from the comparators.
