A camera system and a camera are provided to display an image corresponding to image data generated by an image generator of a camera through a display of an external flash unit to provide information to a user. A camera system includes a camera and an external flash unit. The camera includes an image pickup unit(4) for capturing an image of an object, an image storage unit(24) for storing image data, an image generator for generating image data based on the image captured by the image pickup unit or predetermined text information and storing the image data in the image storage unit, and an image output unit for outputting the image data read from the image storage unit. The external flash unit includes a communication unit connected with the camera, a light-emitting unit which flashes according to an instruction from the camera, an image receiver for receiving image data through the communication unit, and an image display for displaying an image corresponding to the received image data.
