A camera is provided to obtain images with high quality by varying gradation characteristic of gamma correction according to a luminance variation estimation value. A camera includes a face detector(26), a gamma correction controller(27), and a gamma corrector(12). The face detector detects a face from an inputted image and calculates a luminance variation estimation value in a face region including the detected face. The gamma correction controller determines gradation characteristic according to the luminance variation estimation value. The gamma corrector performs gamma correction on the inputted image by using the gradation characteristic determined by the gamma correction controller.
