Powder for grinding and a grinding method are provided to prevent powder from being caught at concave portions formed at the surface of a substrate by forming particles of powder into a shape close to a perfect sphere. Powder for grinding is manufactured by an atomizing method. The powder is used for forming concave portions(3) by grinding a surface of a substrate(5). The powder for grinding contains at least one of Fe and Ni and W(tungsten), as a component, where W has a content of 30 to 55 weight% and a specific gravity of 8.5 or higher. The total content of Fe and Ni is 25 to 70 weight%.
