A data reproduction device having an automatic reproduction mode setup function and a method thereof are provided to automatically perform various setup functions related to a reproduction mode of the data reproduction device by using a subcode recorded on a data storage medium such as CD(Compact Disk)/DVD(Digital Versatile Disk). A predetermined ID code is detected from a data storage medium inserted into a reproduction device(S10,S11). It is decided whether a reproduction mode preset by a user is stored with regard to the detected ID code(S13). If so, the storage medium is reproduced according to the reproduction mode set by the user, and if not, the storage medium is reproduced according to a reproduction mode corresponding to the ID code(S14,S15).
