An apparatus and a method for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device are provided to compensate for luminance by automatically adjusting the level of a high source voltage and/or a gate high voltage. An apparatus for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device includes an LCD panel(110), a backlight assembly(140), an inverter(150), a high source voltage generator, a gamma reference voltage generator(450), and a data driver(120). The LCD panel includes plural data lines. The backlight assembly radiates light to the LCD panel. The inverter generates a burst dimming signal, and turns on/off the backlight assembly according to the burst dimming signal. The high source voltage generator generates a high source voltage based on the burst dimming signal. The gamma reference voltage generator generates a gamma reference voltage based on the level of the high source voltage. The data driver adjusts an analog data level based on a gamma reference voltage level, and supplies the adjusted analog data to the data lines.
