A production method of high purity crude terephthalic acid with a low color-b by preventing the generation of organic impurities that increase the color-b in a process of converting paraxylene into terephthalic acid through an oxidation reaction, and a catalyst composition for producing the crude terephthalic acid are provided. In a process of producing terephthalic acid by reacting paraxylene with oxygen in air by using acetic acid as a solvent in the presence of a catalyst, a catalyst composition for crude terephthalic acid production comprises 100 to 500 ppm of cobalt, 50 to 350 ppm of manganese, 200 to 2000 ppm of bromine, 50 to 500 ppm of copper and 10 to 300 ppm of potassium as a catalyst system for liquid phase oxidation of paraxylene in the acetic acid solvent. A production method of high purity crude terephthalic acid using the catalyst composition comprises the steps of: collecting a crude terephthalic acid slurry by performing liquid phase-oxidation of paraxylene at a temperature of 150 to 225 deg.C and a pressure of 5 to 50 kg/cm^2 by oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas; subjecting the slurry to solid-liquid separation; preparing a slurry again; and cleaning the slurry, and subjecting the cleaned slurry to the solid-liquid separation again. |
