An elevator device where a simple method mechanically limits the movement of an elevator car, which moves vertically in an elevator hoistway, so that it does not move to ranges higher than a predetermined level. This forms a predetermined space above the car when the elevator is maintained, reliably securing safety of a maintenance worker. An engagement body is fixed to a hoistway fixation body at a predetermined height, and an engagement section is placed on the upper part of the car. The engagement section is switchable, by operation from the car, to a position at which the engagement section interferes, in a vertical projection plane, with a part of the engagement body while the elevator is maintained and to a position at which the engagement section does not interfere, in the vertical projection plane, with the engagement body while the elevator is normally operated.
