A portable terminal having a virtual key pad and a character inputting method are provided to realize a small-sized portable terminal by down-scaling the space for a key pad due to the removal of a real key pad. A portable terminal equipped with a camera includes an input button, a display module(115), a camera module(110), and a controller(135). The input button generates a photographing command if a user presses on a predetermined position. The display module synthesizes and outputs preview image data corresponding to a virtual key pad and the input button. The camera module creates the image data by photographing the input button according to the photographing command. The controller extracts the upper-most position in an area selected by a user from the image data to determine input characters corresponding to the upper-most position.
