An image pickup apparatus is provided to capture an image without using a previous operation and perform an accurate focusing operation with low power consumption. An image pickup apparatus includes an optical system(2), an auxiliary light emitting unit(6), a face detector(7), a light projecting direction controller(8), and a focusing unit(5). The optical system includes an image pickup device(4). The auxiliary light emitting unit emits auxiliary light. The face detector detects a face region of a person from an image signal output from the image pickup device. The light projecting direction controller controls a light projecting direction of the auxiliary light emitting unit such that the auxiliary light faces the face of the person. The focusing unit focuses a region including at least a part of the face region.
