A reclining device for adjusting the angle of the backrest of a seat for a vehicle, wherein a ratchet plate is rotatably stacked on a base plate, and an operating shaft is rotatably disposed on the rotating center axis thereof. A circular recessed part disposed about the operating shaft is formed on the opposed face of the ratchet plate to the base plate, and internal teeth are formed in the inner peripheral wall surface of the recessed part. Also, a pole having, on the front end face side, external teeth engage able with and disengage able from the internal teeth from the radial direction of the addendum circle thereof is disposed in the recessed part. On the other hand, a guide projection slidably guiding the pole in the radial direction is formed on the base plate, and a cam rotating together with the operating shaft is disposed in a space on the rear end face side of the pole. A release plate is disposed between the pole and the cam and ratchet plate so as to be rotated together with the cam, and a projection engaged with the cam groove of the pole is formed at the rotating end part of the release plate so that the internal teeth can be disengaged from the external teeth.
