The greater part of the melting and/or refining of a metallic charge, e. g. ferrous scrap to produce steels, in a furnace e.g. an electric, open hearth or a rotary furnace or a converter, is carried out by at least one post-mixing burner fed with an oxidising gas preferably pure oxygen containing sufficient oxygen for the complete combustion of the fuel which may be a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon. The jet of oxidising gas emerging preferably has a speed at least that of sound, so that mixing with the fuel is effected outside the burner. For example, an emerging fuel jet may be enveloped by jets of oxygen. A non-combustible material, capable of dissociating at the temperature of combustion of the fuel e.g. above 2, 000‹C into elements whose recombination is exothermic, particularly water vapour, may be injected into the fuel and/or oxidising gas. The flame axis may be inclined to the longitudinal axis of the burner, e. g. using an oblique nozzle, and the burner may be rotated about its axis and preferably oscillated in a vertical plane about a horizontal axis so that the burner flame periodically sweeps the charge.</p> |
