The decking unit (1), made from two or more lengthwise members (2) and cross-members (3) screwed or bolted together to form a frame covered with a board or panel, has rails (7) on the inside of the lengthwise members to engage with the ends of the cross-members and prevent them from rotating. The lengthwise members are made, for example, from hollow extrusions with end plugs that prevent any compression of the lengthwise members when screwed or bolted to cross-members. The cross-members can be made with projecting upper ribs to protect the edges of covering boards or panels.
