Distortion removal from magnetotelluric data

A method of removing distortion from magnetotelluric data is disclosed. The method includes the steps of; reading data including a plurality of measurements related to the earth's magnetic and electric fields at different locations; determining an impedance tensor from the measurement for each location, determining a phase tensor from the measurement at each location, determining from the phase tensors whether any measurement includes a 1D regional conductivity section; using any measurements with 1 D regional conductivity sections to determine a distortion tensor; if no measurements have 1D regional conductivity determining whether any measurements include a 2D regional conductivity section; using any measurements with 2D regional conductivity sections to determine a distortion tensor; and using the distortion tensor to remove distortion from the measurements.
