Disclosed are compounds of formula (I) wherein: R1 and R1' are covalently linked and are each selected from the group consisting of alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl and substituted alkenyl; R2, R2', R9 and R9' are each separately selected from H, halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, substituted alkenyl, alkynyl, acyl and aryl; R3-R5, R7, R8 and R11 -R15 and R3'-R5', R7', R8' and R11'-R15' are separately selected from H, halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, substituted alkenyl, alkynyl and aryl; R6 and R6' are independently selected from H, halogen, alkyl, substituted alky, alkenyl and alkynyl; and R10 and R10' are independently selected from H, halogen, CH2, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, substituted alkenyl, alcohol and aryl. Also disclosed are compounds of formula (II) wherein the substituents are as described in the specification. Compounds of the type disclosed are novel interleukin-1 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha modulators useful in the treatment of conditions such as tuberculous pleurisy, rheumatoid pleurisy, cancer, cardiovascular disease, skin redness, diabetes, transplant rejection, otitis media (inner ear infection), sinusitis and viral infection.
