A method and an apparatus for transmitting facsimile data are provided to execute a memory transmission function irrespective of receiving capability of a facsimile machine at a receiving side. An apparatus for transmitting facsimile data includes a compressed data generator(120), a data storage unit(140), and a data transmission controller(160). The compressed data generator compresses a document to be transmitted using a plurality of compression methods. The data storage unit stores compressed data generated by the compressed data generator. The data transmission controller communicated with a facsimile machine(200) at a receiving side transmits compressed data corresponding to receiving capability of the facsimile machine at the receiving side to the facsimile machine at the receiving side.
