A method of interrogating a database having an index and data wherein the index is queried using a search key in order to locate data matching the search criteria is disclosed. The index is a hierarchical structure of decision nodes and the structure is navigated until a conclusion set is reached. A node may contain a portion of a key, against which a candidate key is compared in order to determine an action to be taken, and in which the portion of the key stored in a node at an (N+1)th layer is unrelated to the portion stored in a preceding node in the Nth layer.
