R : H or 1-40C hydrocarbon, preferably contain O or N or substituted by NH 2, COOH, epoxy or amido group; X : Ti, Zr or Si; Y1 : 1-12C alkoxy or halo; and a : 1-3. An independent claim is included for a nanoparticle foil obtained by the process, where the foil comprises percentage loss on ignition is greater than 6, preferably greater than 16. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# The process is useful to make the nanoparticle layer (claimed) i.e. useful to reinforce polymer and resin. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The layer has the percentage loss on ignition of greater than 6, preferably greater than 16 (claimed). The layer provides good tear resistance to the polymer and resin. #CMT#INORGANIC CHEMISTRY : #/CMT# Preferred Components: The layer material is a clay or boehmite at 10-70 wt.%, preferably 20-50 wt.%. #CMT#ORGANIC CHEMISTRY : #/CMT# Preferred Process: The mixing step is carried out at 20-25[deg]C. The reaction of the mixture with the agent and the acid is carried out at 20-25[deg]C, preferably not exceeding 90[deg]C. Preferred Components: The polyol is a diol, preferably ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol or a polyethylene glycol. The grafting agent is an organosilane, preferably containing two or three alkoxy groups. The grafting agent is present at 15-75 wt.%, preferably 30-70 wt.%. The acid maintains the pH of the mixture at 1-6, preferably 4. #CMT#EXAMPLE : #/CMT# A quaternary ammonium salt treated montmorillonite (45 g) and polyethylene glycol (300 g) were mixed with water (100 g) and acetic acid (90 g) under agitation in a balloon tricol. The obtained mixture was heated at 50[deg]C a clay dispersion. N-styrylaminoethyl-gamma -amminopropyltrimethoxysilane (50 g) was added to the heated mixture to obtain a suspension of pH 5. The suspension was heated for 4 hours and worked up to obtain nanoparticle clay.</p> |
