A process for the production of linear fibre-forming polyamides having improved colour stability and resistance to oxidation comprises reacting, at a temperature of 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. a compound of formula H2N-A-NH2, where A is an a : o -alkylene radical having 4 to 6 carbon atoms or an o : o 1-m-xylylene radical, a dicarboxylic acid of the formula HOOC-B-COOH, where B is an a : o -alkylene radical having 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and a phosphonic acid ester of the formula <FORM:0992736/C3/1> where X1 and X2 are the same or different and each represent an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, a hydroxy alkyl or halogen alkyl having 2 to 4 carbon atoms or a cyclohexyl radical, R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represent hydrogen, or an alkyl, cyclohexyl or 1-methylcyclohexyl-(1) group, at least one of R1 and R2 being a secondary or tertiary alkyl or cycloalkyl group, R3 is hydrogen or a methyl group and R4 is hydrogen, or a methyl, ethyl or phenyl group, to form a polymeric amide, the proportion of said phosphonic ester being 0.001 to 5% by weight of the final polymer. In a modification of the process, a precondensate of the diamine and dicarboxylic acid is reacted with the phosphonic acid ester. |
