PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a VCM (voice coil motor) driving method for improving reliability of a head unloading operation. SOLUTION: The method of driving the VCM to unload a head onto a ramp in a hard disk drive includes: a stage of driving the VCM with a first driving voltage so that the head moves to a predetermined position in a ramp direction; and a stage of driving the VCM with a second driving voltage higher than the first driving voltage in a predetermined first time so that the head moves up along the inclined surface of the ramp. In this method, the VCM is driven with the first driving voltage when moving to the predetermined position, so the moving speed of the head is suppressed and a shock that the head and ramp have when coming into contact with each other is minimized. Further, when the head moves up along the inclined surface of the ram, the VCM is driven with the second driving voltage higher than the first driving voltage, so driving force for the VCM is secured to avoid the collision of the head against a disk due to a deficiency in driving force.
