High temperature insulation is prepared by casting an aqueous slurry of fibres, siliceous and calcareous materials and free lime into a steel mould and heating at 160-212‹ F. at atmospheric pressure to form an undisrupted tobermorite gel network bridging the fibres and then autoclaving, at or above 200 p.s.i. at or above 500‹ F., the quiescent materials to convert the tobermorite gel to a crystalline tobermorite or xonotolite structure bridging the fibres. The fibres used are either asbestos fibres or glass fibres coated with phenolformaldehyde, polyvinyl chloride or butyl, acrylonitrile or neoprene elastomers. The slurries contain wollastonite, or a mixture of wollastonite and Portland cement, as the calcium silicate and contain, by weight of solids, 3-35% lime, 18-40% silica and 10-25% fibres.</p> |
