PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-stage compression type rotary compressor capable of performing stable operation by eliminating the pressure reversal of the discharge pressure of a first rotation compression element and the discharge pressure of a second rotation compression element. SOLUTION: This rotary compressor comprises a communication passage 100 allowing an intermediate pressure area to communicate with the area of the low pressure which is the suction pressure of the first rotation compression element 32 and a valve device 107 opening and closing the communication passage 100. The high pressure which is the discharge pressure of the second rotation compression element 34 is applied as a back pressure to an upper vane. When the intermediate pressure is a predetermined upper limit value or the pressure difference between the pressure of the second rotation compression element 34 on the refrigerant discharge side and the intermediate pressure is a predetermined value, the valve device 107 opens the communication passage 100.
