A compact compressor comprising a first tubular housing portion (10); a second tubular housing portion (20) having a first end region (21) open to the first tubular housing portion (10) and a second end region (22) defining a compression chamber (C) and housing a piston (30); an electric motor (40) carried by the first tubular housing portion (10); a driving means (50) connecting the piston (30) to the electric motor (40); a valve plate (70) seated against the second end region (22) of the second tubular housing portion (20); and an end cover (80) fixed to the second tubular housing portion (20) and acting against the valve plate (70) and providing, internally and through the valve plate (70), fluid communications between the compression chamber (C) and the suction line (1) and discharge line (2) of a refrigeration circuit to which the compressor is coupled.
