PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten an arrangement interval between recording medium carrying means such as a roller, provided on the upstream and downstream sides of a recording area, by reducing the ejection-port-arrangement-direction (recording-medium-carrying-direction) dimensions of a recording head while maintaining the performance of capping by a cap member. SOLUTION: The abutment of the cap member is received by a cap retainer member which is provided along the outer periphery of the side surface of the recording head. This reduces the ejection-port-arrangement-direction dimension of the recording head while maintaining the capping performance, and shortens the arrangement interval between the recording-medium carrying means. The cap retainer member is set in a position to recede from the position of the abutment, so that interference with the recording-medium carrying means is avoided, and so that the arrangement interval between the carrying means is minimized.
