PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly precise ellipse detection method and an image recognition device for executing the detection method and a controller for executing various control using an ellipse detected from an input image. SOLUTION: A candidate graphic as the graphic(i.e., pupil) of an ellipse candidate is extracted from image data, and the intersections of a straight line(straight line C in figure) passing the central point of a candidate graphic at a set angleθas shown by a graphic 3(b) and the outline point of the graphic of the ellipse candidate are set as a point A and a point B, and a first distance between the point A and the central point of the candidate graphic and a second distance between the point B and the central point of the candidate graphic are calculated. Then, when the first distance is equal to the second distance, the point A and the point B used in calculating the first distance and the second distance are stored as the outline formation points of the ellipse. Afterwards, the positions of the stored outline formation points are read, and the ellipse equation is solved by using a Gaussian Newton's method so that an ellipse parameter can be calculated, and that an ellipse can be restored.
