1,262,728. Fibre-reinforced polylactam moulding compositions. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 23 Dec., 1969 [7 Jan., 1969], No. 62528/69. Heading C3R. In a continuous process for producing fibrereinforced polyamide moulding compositions by impregnating a fibre structure by drawing it through a melt of a polymerization mixture and then guiding it through a zone heated to a temperature between that of the melt and 350‹ C., cooling and chopping it into a granulate, the polymerization mixture which is stable for at least 30 minutes at the temperature of the melt comprises a lactam, 0À05 to 10 wt. per cent of a catalyst which is an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid of pK a between 3 and the pKb of the lactam, and 0À05 to 20 wt. per cent of an isocyanate or washed isocyanate activator. Formates are the only salts specified. An additional basic catalyst may be present, e.g. Na phenoxide, cyanamide or cyanide, KNO 2 , K 2 CO 3 or Ca(CN) 2 . The lactam may be capro-, caprylic or lauric lactam and the fibre, which may be sized with a bonding agent, may be a strand, woven fabric, web or mat of glass, cotton, sisal, asbestos, carbon-boron, or metal, e.g. iron. Fillers, dyes, pigments, lubricants, plasticizers, antistatic agents, stabilizers or surfactants may also be included in the melt, especially 10 to 100 Á silica or 1 to 3% of a soluble polyamide. |
