Processing of a source image I<SUB>S0</SUB> includes a step of breaking the image down into a series of n component images (I<SUB>C1</SUB>, I<SUB>C2</SUB>, ..., I<SUB>Ck</SUB>,, I<SUB>Cn</SUB>) in a colour space that includes the absolute brightness quantity and is, according to the invention, independent of any display device. When the images in the series are displayed one after the other at a frequency n times greater than the display frequency of the source image and higher than the colour fusion frequency of the human eye, the resulting fused image I<SUB>F</SUB> is identical or nearly identical to the source image. The invention enables differences between component images to be accentuated and the interference level to be raised without adversely affecting the image display.
