<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anode for lead acid storage battery, containing lignin with little lowering of specific surface area of the anode accompanied by passage of charging/discharging cycle, and a lead acid storage battery with improved cycle life, capable of enlarging discharge capacity, without making the activator brittle. <P>SOLUTION: The lignin used for the anode of the lead acid storage battery has a structure with carboxyl group introduced by cleaving benzene ring of C<SB>6</SB>to C<SB>3</SB>fundamental structure of a part of a molecule, (lignin, having quinone structure at a part of the molecule is preferable).
