<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting diode-based backlight system having high luminance and uniform light intensity. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of LEDs 30 are arranged adjacently to a light pipe 32. The light pipe 32 is provided with a linear anamorphic groove part over the total length of its undersurface. A small piece of a shortened diffusion body is arranged adjacently to an incident-side end of the light pipe. The incident-side end is arranged below the undersurface of the light pipe. The diffusion body is mounted on the upper surface of the light pipe, and has a constant or variable angle characteristic. By further uniformly diffusing a light ray, the shortened diffusion body 42 eliminates hot spots and irregularity of light intensity in a region directly adjacent to the LEDs of the light pipe.
