This invention provides an electrolyte membrane-electrode membrane assembly for a solid polymer fuel cell, which can realize good joint between a gas diffusion electrode membrane and a solid electrolyte membrane and, at the same time, can realize even dispersion of an electrode catalyst to provide a high electrode activity and has better properties, a process for producing the electrolyte membrane-electrode membrane assembly, and a fuel cell comprising the electrolyte membrane-electrode membrane assembly. The electrolyte membrane-electrode membrane assembly is produced by joining a shaped membrane, for gas diffusion electrode membrane formation, formed from a paste composition comprising a quaternary base forming functional group-containing polymeric organic compound and an electrode catalyst to a quaternary base forming functional group-containing quaternary base-type anion exchange resin precursor membrane for solid electrolyte membrane formation, allowing a polyfunctional quaternizing agent to exist in both the membranes at their joint interface, allowing the quaternary base forming functional group possessed by each of the shaped membrane and the precursor membrane to be bonded to each functional group possessed by the polyfunctional quaternizing agent at the joint interface to form a quaternary base-type anion exchange group and, at the same time, to crosslink the resultant both anion exchange resins through the polyfunctional quaternizing agent, and then quaternarily basifying the quaternary base forming functional group remaining unquaternized and remaining in the formed assembly. A fuel cell comprising the electrolyte membrane-electrode membrane assembly thus produced possesses excellent joint properties, durability, and output voltage. |
