PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect air-fuel ratios which are dispersed by those causes other than the operating characteristics of an intake valve. SOLUTION: An ECU performs the program including the step (S110) of controlling the motor of a VVL mechanism so that the intake valve of each of cylinders is closed at the bottom dead center, the step (S120) of detecting the rotational speed of a crankshaft based on the signals transmitted from a crank angle sensor, and the step (S130) of calculating the air-fuel ratio of each of the cylinders based on the rotational speed of the crankshaft at the crank angle corresponding to the expansion stroke of each of the cylinders.
