PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective scanning width common to each face to be scanned in an optical scanner of the type that a plurality of faces to be scanned share an optical deflector without expanding the size of the deflection reflecting face of the optical deflector. SOLUTION: A plane including the rotation axis AX of the optical deflector 5 and parallel to a main scanning line is taken as a reference plane PS, respective normal reflection positions RA and RB of a plurality of light beams on the optical deflector 5 are set two-dimensionally slightly asymmetrically with respect to the reference plane PS, thus the effective writing width common to the faces to be scanned 9A and 9B is given and a detection region with a light receiving means is given outside the start positions of writing CA and CB of the respective faces to be scanned on both sides of the reference plane.
