Boxes pass through an end folding device and under an adhesive applicator 20, a label applicator 24, and a pressure pad 28 which act during a pause in the action of a conveying system. A frame 17 carries adhesive container 20, label holder 24 and a ram 34 at positions 1a, 1b and 1c respectively and is moved up and down by a crank 18 and connecting rod 19 driven by the electric motor 52 through chain drive 54. At position la the adhesive container 20 is brought to bear on the box so that drops of glue from orifice 21 are applied to the box and the top flap. At position 1b, the label holder 24 is applied to the glue-coated box and the lowest of the labels 6 adheres to the box and is drawn from the holder on the upward stroke of the frame 17. At position 1c the ram 34, e.g. consisting of expanded rubber, bears on the label 6 to press it on to the box. The glue container 20 and label holder 24 are attached to the frame 17 by eyes 22, and fins 23, 26, so they can be vertically displaced. This motion of the label holder 24 results in clamping levers 27 swivelling vertically about screws 30 to release holder rod 31 of a weight 32 to enable it to rest on the labels 6 and press the lowest label against the box. The boxes 1 are conveyed along a slideway 7 by pawls 8 which are attached to reciprocating rails 9 by pivot pins 10. The rails 9 are situated in longitudinal slots in the slideway 7 and are reciprocated by a crank 14 and push-rod 15 driven by a chain drive 53 from an electric motor 52. The box bottom flap (4), Fig. 3 (not shown), and one side flap (3) are folded by a folder 39 with two forks 43, 44, which moves with a circular motion to fold flap (4) first, and is driven by the motor 52 through chain drive 53 and crank 41. The other side flap (31), Fig. 3 (not shown), is then folded by a cam surface (471), Fig. 2 (not shown), and the top flap 9 guided to a bearing surface 45 by guide rails 47, 48 while the box is moved to position 1a. The top flap is finally folded down by a tongue 50.
