The drive has an endless traction mechanism that is designed as a gear belt (110) and that runs on a pulley designed as a gear wheel (100). An optical scanning device scans a position of the gear belt on the pulley. The optical scanning device has a light source (120) for transmitting light beams (125, 126) e.g. laser beam, to a circle segment. A sensor array (130) receives the transmitted light signals, and an evaluation device evaluates the transmitted light signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting wear of an endless traction mechanism.
