PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an olefin polymerization catalyst having high activity, free from problems of the adhesion of polymer to a reactor, etc., and producing a powdery polyolefin having excellent particle form and enabling easy separation from a solvent and provide a method for the polymerization of an olefin. SOLUTION: The olefin polymerization catalyst is composed of (A) a carrier composed of an oxide of a specific element and essentially free from hydroxy group by removing hydroxy group from the surface of a precursor of the carrier (A) by the chemical treatment with a specific organic aluminum compound or a specific organic magnesium compound, (B) a specific transition metal compound containing a transition metal having a cyclic anion ligand bonded throughη-bond, (C) an activated compound containing a cation and a compatible non-coordinated anion and capable of forming a metal complex having catalytic activity by reacting with the transition metal compound (B), and (D) an organic aluminum compound, wherein the activated compound (C) is added to a reactor through a sintered filter having a nominal degree of filtration of≥0.01μm and≤5μm.
