PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce force required for raising a center presser foot to a retreating height position of the center presser foot. SOLUTION: The center presser foot device 1 of a sewing machine has the center presser foot 29 for pressing fabric to a needle plate while sewing, a vertically moving mechanism M1 of the center presser foot for vertically moving the center presser foot, and a retreating mechanism M2 of center presser foot for raising the center presser foot to the retreating height position when the sewing is finished. A lower end of a tension spring 16 is linked to a spring hook part 46a formed by bending the tip of a center pressing foot raising member 46 of the retreating mechanism M2 so that the lower end of the tension spring 16 is raised when the center presser foot 29 is raised to the retreating height position P5. Thereby, there is no necessity for considering urging force of the tension spring 16 when the center presser foot 29 is raised to the retreating height position P5, so that load of a motor 42 is reduced to achieve efficient retreating.
