[PROBLEMS] To provide heat-expandable microspheres which are excellent in heat resistance and exhibit high expansion ratios and stable expansion behavior, a process for the production of the same, and suitable uses thereof. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] Heat-expandable microspheres wherein the shells holding a blowing agent therein are made of a copolymer having a polymethacrylimide structure, particularly, heat-expandable microspheres as described above wherein the monomers to form the polymethacrylimide structure through copolymerization are methacrylonitrile and methacrylic acid; a process for the production of the heat-expandable microspheres; and use of the same as additives.
