<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a method and apparatus for analyzing the energy of X-rays orγ-rays. <P>SOLUTION: A high-speed signal processing system accepts input data from a detector-preamplifier 20, and performs a spectral analysis of X-rays illuminating the detector. The system divides the required digital signal processing steps between a hard-wired processor implemented in a combinatorial digital logic 25 which detects the presence of the X-rays signal in the digitized data stream and extracts the amplitude filtered estimated value and a programmable digital signal processing computer 28 for connecting so that the estimate value of the amplitude by which filtering is performed may be refined and they may form a desired spectroscopic analysis between the digital signal processing computers 28, and achieves high throughputs at low cost by dividing the required digital signal processing steps.
